摘要

I agree wholeheartedly with Harold N. Boyer ("The bookstore fad," Feedback, LJ 11/1/09, p. 11), who argued that borrowing laziness-placating models from certain businesses is an attempt to justify the existence of the public library. How cathartic to see it articulated so well.rnI often see that circulation and use statistics are decreasing and that public libraries aren't faring well. Yet they're the ones bending over backward to integrate the library into the commoner's life, while academic libraries, which see no shortage or abatement of circulation and use around the clock, are still as forbidding and terrible as ever, with the user-inexplicable Library of Congress system and...lacking what users would really like-an unrealistic, life-sized virtual-reality map of exactly where everything is.... What makes the library frustrating to many people is the introduction of change.
