A new age for syntans

An inevitable step in the transformation of wet-blue to finished leather is filling the spaces in the skin matrix. One drawback associated with chrome tanning - the lack of fullness - is addressed in the post-tanning process by employing synthetic tanning agents, or 'svntans'. Generally, these are manufactured by enhancing the molecular weight of aromatic compounds such as phenol and its derivatives (melamine, for example), through condensation reaction.
