Movistar Chile (Telefonica) has announced that it has started using drone technology to monitor its fiber-optic network in the country's northern zones. Following a trial that revealed that the use of drones improved productivity by up to 300 percent, the technology will now be used to assess and prevent tower and network damage, especially in the event of natural disasters such as a floods, storms or earthquakes. The company said eight of its engineers have been trained in the use of drones, which will now be deployed with a view to eliminating the need for workers to take risks, allowing the company to respond to network problems in a faster and safer manner.
