Hermann Niemeyer Fernandez: A Pioneer of Chilean Science (October 26, 1918, Ovalle, Chile to June 7, 1991, Santiago, Chile)

In 2011, the Chilean Scienti?c Community commemorated the 20th anniversary of the death of Professor Hermann Niemeyer Ferna磏dez, an eminent Chilean biochemist who greatly contributed to the development of Chilean and Latin American science (Fig. 1). His last public appearance, in September 1990, was to receive the Juvenal Herna磏dez medal of the University of Chile. Shortly afterward, he retired from academic life for health reasons, and less than a year later he died. Thus, many current members of Panamerican Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PABMB) or even of the Chilean Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology had no opportunity to know him, and it is likely, therefore, that many may ask why his name was chosen for a lecture of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a choice that has helped to strengthen the links between the Chilean and Spanish Societies. Why he is so important?
