IOWA BLOOD RUN CULTURAL LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN

Blood Run is the largest known and most complex historical settlement of Native Americans of the Midwestern Oneota tradition and was occupied from approximately 1500 until 1714-a home to 10,000 people. Straddling the border of Iowa and South Dakota, it's been surrounded by rural farming communities since the mid-19th century, but its history, dating back geologic eons, is being uncovered by landscape architects for the planning of a park and cultural preserve that will honor its legacy and protect its ecology. Quinn Evans's framework identifies natural and cultural resources and scouts potential locations for visitor centers, trails, educational facilities, campgrounds, and more, highlighting the remnants of Native American life still visible, such as earthen mounds. Several tribes of Native Americans have shared their cultural perspectives on the site, making it clear that opening Blood Run to the wider world necessitates navigating and delineating many sacred spaces that hold spiritual history. "The fact that this project demonstrates that they went in consultation with the various tribes and reached an outcome that everyone collectively agreed on and was excited about is really significant," one juror said. "It's not sexy or flashy, but [it] represents some of landscape architecture's basic values."
