摘要

Since childhood, I've paid attention to the weather, fascinated with Nature's offerings. Maybe it's something to do with living in Tornado Alley, in north Texas. Maybe that curiosity was sparked by those "blue norther" cold fronts I saw as a kid in the 1960's. Maybe that fascination came from boiling hot summer days cushioned by rare pop-up showers on unbearable July days in the Lone Star state. As a fisheries biologist, my career is af- fected by droughts and floods and all those normal weather events in between those inevitable extremes. Weather patterns each spring seem to revolve around slow moving low pressure systems that argue with high pressure and moist air moving from the gulf or one of the oceans. The result is often floods.
