Spinning Thick

A fellow member of the Online Guild tells the story of a demonstration where she was one of several spinners. Most were spinning fine yarns; she was spinning thick yarn for rugs. One woman watched for a while and then whispered confidentially 'I expect you will soon be as good as the others!' It is perhaps because when we start spinning we produce thick, lumpy yarn that many of us, once we can spin fine, never return to thicker yarns. I would suggest that this is a shame, as it can be great fun spinning chunky yarns, and the items which you can make from such yarns are fun both to make and to wear or use. Moreover, the technical prowess needed to produce the yarn you want is as exacting for a thick yarn as for a thin one - in some ways more so: the fibre passes through your hands at such a rate as to need extra vigilance.
