Riches from the deep? Yes, really, from the ocean floor! The dyes used to colour the fibres in the photographs were all lying on the seabed for more than 200 years. It all started in October 2002. A friend and I travelled to Avignon to attend a meeting of the Dyes in History and Archaeology group. We went by train, a wonderful way to travel as you can see where you are going. I must admit that a large part of the attraction was the location - the historic city of Avignon, with its rich legacy from the era of the popes who were installed there during the fourteenth century, and its near neighbours Aries and Nimes, with their Roman and artistic connections.
