Maori Weaving in Cambridge

On a hot July weekend in 2006 a number of Cambridge Guild members took part in a workshop at White House Arts to learn about the art of weaving Maori feathered cloaks (kakahu). The workshop was part of an education programme associated with the Pasifika Styles project at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge. We met our tutors - Kahutoi Te Kanawa (Kahu) who follows her mother and grandmother in being a renowned Maori weaver and her assistant, Bethany Edwards, who has a degree in Applied Arts: Maori Design and Technology. Both weavers are totally dedicated to preserving the skills of their ancestors and, throughout the weekend, delighted us all with their Maori legends. Almost everything we did had a story behind it.
