A Salutary Tale and a few thoughts on Health and Safety

There was a time when I, like a lot of acquaintances, looked slightly askance at Health and Safety official jargon and failec to see the sense behind it. Having resolved to alter this almost dismissive thinking am to delve into the subject on behalf of the Association and other groups, I can now say that I can see the absolute sense behinc the Health and Safety policies which all voluntary organisations must have. I'm sure all Guild members, and particularly committee members who are trustees, would agree that we all have a duty of care to each other and to anyone whom we pay (e.g. speakers and tutors), 01 who visits us (e.g. children and the public) Indeed, unless we have evidence that we have considered all risks and taken all reasonable precautions, any insurance becomes invalid. This is where the paperwork comes in; it is the evidence, so contract forms are not only desirable but essential. The Association has public and product liability to cover all affiliated Guilds, provided, of course, that Guilds pay the annual fee. This is a huge benefit but carries obligations too.
