DOCUMENTING THE U.S. SPACE PROGRAM

As a student, a book that caught my interest was A source book in astronomy (edited by Harlow Shapley), which reprinted several ground-breaking papers from the first half of the twentieth century including Hubble on his discovery of the expansion of the universe and Gamow on the theory of the Big Bang. I had wondered how Shapley had chosen the papers from the thousands published. But that was a simple, almost trivial, task compared to the selection of documents from the literally miles of records related to the conception, planning, documentation and reporting on the U.S. manned space flight programme.
