Astronomy is a science with deep roots in Italy and, thanks to the efforts of a cluster of dedicated specialists, studies of its cultural aspects there have reached a level of scholarship easily comparable with that of other European countries with longer traditions in the discipline. This volume is an example of those efforts headed by Mario Codebo who organized the corresponding "convegno" in the winter of 2002, in the beautiful Ligurian coast.
