摘要

'Copyright law in itself can seem bad enough', observes the retired archivist Tim Padfield, but the legal complexities of copyright in unpublished material and the relative dearth of informed expertise on the topic make it unsurprising that 'many fight shy' with copyright and archives (2). Fortunately, archivists and records managers, not to mention librarians, information professionals, researchers, and information users, need not fight as shy, thanks to the assistance of the latest edition of Padfield's well-established handbook of rich, informed, and accessible copyright guidance. Now in its sixth edition (2019), this book remains a worthy stalwart of the responsible British information professional's bookshelf. It is with reference to Padfield's expanded and updated advice on lawfully quoting from copyright-protected works, for example (advice Padfield sets out over a page of detailed yet accessible text) that I can feel assured in extracting the author's words for the start of this piece (171).
