With his two new guidebooks, The Berlin 1945 Battlefield Guide, Parts 1 and 2, David McCormack delivers a much-needed link between the history we read in books and the physical terrain on which we can walk. The guides fill a niche that is not yet satisfactorily filled by either conventional histories or travel books and guides. It is also less common to find well-written English-language guides on Eastern Front battles - travelers already have several choices for battlefield tours of Normandy in particular and other Western Front sites in France and Belgium. McCormack's guides are written for the traveler who is primarily interested in the military history, specifically ' ... those who sometimes feel a little frustrated by the delivery of the guide or speaker who is obliged to cater to a wide audience [on a guided tour]' (Part 1, p. 9).
