Indo-French workshop on electronic conducting polymers — A report

A workshop on electronic conducting polymers, sponsored by the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research, New Delhi, was held at the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi, during 20-22 March 1995. The theme of the workshop was "Conducting Polymers from Laboratory Curiosity to Technology — A Fact No Longer Fiction". It was the outcome of a joint proposal by Prof. E M Genies of Joseph Fourier University, Grenoble, France, and Dr D C Trivedi of CECRI. Participation in this workshop was only by invitation and ten French and twenty Indian scientists belonging to various disciplines participated. The lectures were grouped under eight different headings, namely, general concepts, charge transport and modelling, molecular recognition, conducting composite materials, polythiophenes, polyphenylenes and substituted polyphenylenes, new conducting polymers, and polyanilines. Prof. G V Subba Rao, Director, CECRI, in his welcome address, narrated the growth of conducting polymers as a science and Prof. S V Subramanyam of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in his inagural address, touched upon the Indian scenario in the field of conducting polymers.
