China and Japan in the Late Meiji Period: China Policy and the Japanese Discourse on National Identity, 1895-1904

This book is one of a series published by the Routledge/Leiden Series in Modern East Asian Politics and History, whose aim is to encourage comparative and inter-disciplinary work amongst East Asian specialists, focusing on primary sources in the vernacular languages involved. Urs Zachmann has thus chosen to examine Japanese popular attitudes toward China, mainly during the later Meiji era, as revealed primarily in comments published in six major newspapers-Tokyo nichinichi shinbun, Child shinbun, Kokumin shinbun, Jiji shinpo, Nippon, and Yorozu choho-and the general magazine Taiyo.
