Canada's Resource Economy in Transition: The Past. Present, and Future of Canadian Staples Industries

Understanding Canada's resource economy in a global and historical context has long been the goal of a highly successful tradition of writing on the political economy of Canadian "staples" industries. The contributions of Innis (1956), Lower (1973), Creighton (1937), and Nelles (1974), to name but a few key writers, have provided a rich scholarly heritage that is a base for an evaluation of the changing nature of Canada's staples industries (the works cited are selected examples). Since at least the early 1980s, these industries have been experiencing an accelerating pace of change due to a host of social, political, and economic restructuring pressures.
