Journey to Crossrail: railways under London, from Brunei to the Elizabeth Line

Stephen Halliday has now ventured into the history of London's underground railways on three occasions. In this book he sketches the history of tunnelling under the capital from the Thames tunnel to the modern challenges of building Crossrail. He touches on many related subjects including vacuum-powered railways and the Metropolitan Line. A parallel is drawn with the tunnelling shield invented by Sir Marc Brunei and used on the Thames Tunnel construction and all others since designed, including Price's rotary excavator, before leading into a detailed explanation of the naming of the tunnelling machines used on Crossrail. The tunnelling tasks are discussed as are brief descriptions of stations along the route. There is also a chapter that deals with the archaeological finds made alone the route.
