From 1860 rapid strides were made in train control through the introduction of centralising signal and point control in cabins. Combined with absolute block working and interlocking this materially improved railway safety but railway companies were slow to adopt it on cost grounds. Nevertheless signal engineering companies grew rapidly and vied to improve and patent systems.
