Dark Days and Brighter Days for Northern Ireland Railways

Northern Ireland may be smaller than the historic county of Yorkshire but for many years it has had its own railway company which has had an interesting but difficult history. Like the railways in the south of Ireland and in Britain, the railways in the north were nationalised after the Second World War. In all three areas the nationalised railways began as a part of a monolithic structure that also embraced road transport. At different times and in different ways the monoliths were dismantled. Nationalisation in the north began with the Ulster Transport Authority but in 1967 this gave way to Northern Ireland Railways and Ulsterbus.
