While considerations of media properties are often saturated with industry-specific details and terminologies, James Buhler's Theories of the Soundtrack offers a clear yet sophisticated overview of film sound theory, which is accessible to both established academics and general enthusiasts. In addition to providing a fine foundation of pertinent historical information, this book presents a far deeper analysis of theoretical frameworks, which have previously been used to effectively combine the mediums of film and soundtrack. Through consideration of six theoretical models, Buhler expands his research to chart the development of individual topics as they developed chronologically, and eventually concludes with a consideration of the soundtrack as it relates to digital media. Scholars of both film and audio theory will find valuable insights within this book. Each theory is approached with a nuance, which not only brings clarity to its implicit and explicit claims, but also expands these theories to allow for a greater consideration of the film-sound hybrid.
