In the opening pages of What Does It Mean to Be White? Developing White Racial Literacy, Robin DiAngelo writes, "The vast majority of whites are racially illiterate. . . . Most white people have never been given direct or complex information about racism before, and often cannot consciously recognize, understand, or articulate much about it" (p. 4). In response, DiAngelo's book guides readers through developing the literacy in White racial socialization requisite for advancing racial justice. Given the pervasiveness of deleterious racial disparities among those receiving human services-and the dramatic over-representation of white practitioners offering those services-DiAngelo's book is particularly relevant to human service professionals (National Association of Social Workers, 2006).
