Chasing the American Dream: Understanding What Shapes Our Fortunes by Mark Robert Rank, Thomas A. Hirschl, and Kirk A. Foster is an ambitious little book. It reports on interviews and focus group discussions of the American Dream and the economic risks and challenges respondents face. It considers these interviews in light of a vast body of economic research concluding, as several other recent books have, that economic security and upward mobility are nearly impossible for most Americans born poor or working-class.
