Each January, nuclear professionals look forward to gathering inrnWashington, D.C., to network; learn about spent fuel managementrnpractices worldwide, new developments in the field and emergingrnissues; and discuss the effects of politics and public perception onrnprograms around the world. The 33rd annual Spent Fuel ManagementrnSeminar, sponsored by the Institute of Nuclear Materials Managementrn(INMM), in partnership with the U.S. Nuclear InfrastructurernCouncil (NIC), drew about 100 participants. There were representativesrnfrom Bulgaria, China, Japan, Spain, Sweden, South Korearnand the United States, and the seminar featured presentations byrnkey global industry experts. Topics included the status of globalrnspent fuel management, international transportation of spent fuel,rnthe politics of spent fuel management in the United States, spentrnfuel technology projects and consolidated storage initiatives. CoreyrnHinderstein, president of INMM, noted in her opening remarksrnthat “dealing with the back end of the fuel cycle is part and parcelrnto responsible nuclear stewardship.”
