EPA's Lead & Copper Rule and Stages 1&2 Disinfection By-Products Rules have caused water systems to increase application of pH adjustment, alkalinity, and buffering chemicals. Large volumes of chemicals are often purchased and stored in dry granular or powdered form. Storage and dispensing facilities can be an operational headache when chemicals do not flow properly. Methods of analysis for powdered and granular solids applied to the design of storage & feed facilities result in better gravity flow characteristics. Solids flow issues, considerations for chemical specification and storage, and the application of solids flow techniques to the custom design of a silo are discussed.
