The Town of Bennington Water Department originally started as The Bennington Water Company in 1886. The owner was Henry Putnam, a manufacturer who obtained a patent for flip-top closures for carbonated beverage bottles and eventually became a large benefactor of Bennington. Mr. Putnam started the system with a 13 million gallon reservoir and 3 miles of water main that fed 300 customers in the village of Bennington (now known as Old Bennington Village within the town of Bennington). As the village grew, so did the water system.
