摘要

This book reproduces articles, first published in the Harvard Educational Review over the past decade, that offer insights into the importance of local and indigenous ways of knowing. It is an introduction to the epistemology of indigenous thinking. The editors identify three goals: to introduce the concept of indigenous knowledge to the uninformed; to explain why it is important to discuss this issue in the context of education; to help readers understand why the concepts of 'sites of struggle', 'strength' and 'survivance' are important in this discussion. The first focus ('struggle') identifies the aspects of education at issue when considering knowledge and local or place-based ways of knowing. 'Strength' is used to identify examples of communities naming and using sources of strength, as well as taking action to foster education based on their own indigenous ways of knowing. 'Survivance' describes the human drive for education and the importance of exploring different worldviews and epistemologies.
