I have been interested in European integration and the various interdisciplinary approaches to its languages for many years, so - having been intrigued by a strange article in a recent issue of The Independent, which made the strong claim that the place in England where my academic career started must be 'the most linguistically diverse city in Western Europe' - I was keen to verify such assertions by looking at this book on multilingualism in the European Union (EU).
