That last piece of chocolate candy you ate, or the last chocolate-flavored cookie, may have contained chocolate from beans that were harvested by an exhausted and broken ten-year-old slave from Mali or Burkina Faso. He was probably sent away with a smooth-talking trafficker by his parents, with the expectation that he would return with money for the family. Much of the world's chocolate bean production is in sub-Saharan Africa, primarily in Cote d'lvoire (Ivory Coast) and Ghana. Child labor is common in that part of the world, and unfortunately, child slavery is common enough.
