The Congress was opened with welcomes from Prof Piet Demeester, (Ghent University), Raf Meersman (President FITCE Belgium) and Dr Stefan Rugel, (President FITCE Europe).Keynote session - smart cities.Sofie Bracke, Executive councillor for Economy, Trade, Sport and Port, City of Ghent described the evolution of the field and the contribution from the commercial sector, the universities, the city and the Flemish government. She concluded that a city cannot be smart without smart local government. Danny Goderis of trade association Agoria, presented examples of Smart City initiatives, including a programme networking 200,000 meters in Antwerp. Stefan Rugel, Deloitte Consulting, spoke about the globalised nature of the market, the role of strategic road maps,a data driven strategy and the citizen-centric approach.
