A Two-phase Algorithm to Estimate Transfer Passenger Volumes in Multi-modal Public Transportation Systems

Due to their contribution to sustainable urban transportation, multi-modal public transportation systems, as an attractive alternative to private automobiles, have been built by many city councils. With more passengers using public transport services, it is very important to estimate transfer passenger volumes for each public transportation hub. In this study, we first establish a multi-modal public transportation network by applying the supernetwork theory, then construct a two-phase algorithm to estimate transfer passenger volumes at public transportation stations and finally testify the proposed algorithm by a case study. For the two-phase algorithm, Phase (Ⅱ) is about a route choice model, while Phase (Ⅰ) is about the mathematical definition of efficient routes, followed by a method to generate the set of efficient routes. The proposed algorithm which takes maximum transfer frequencies into account, does not need to label all the stations but successfully improves the efficiency to find efficient routes.
