NAHRO, NYCHA Team up for Public Housing Preservation Effort

NAHRO and NYCHA have joined together in a joint effort to engage PHA officials nationwide to participate in a national campaign aimed at educating members of Congress about the need to preserve the nation's public housing stock. Of the nearly 3,000 PHAs across the country, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the largest, serving nearly half a million residents. However, years of budget cuts have made NYCHA's job of operating its 176,000 units increasingly difficult. Much of New York City's public housing infrastructure is close to 60 years old and in desperate need of substantial rehabilitation. Instead, due to its lack of capital funding, NYCHA has been performing short-term repairs, forced to leave the systemic issues facing its aging infrastructure unfixed.
