Over the past few years the dairy industry has responded well to targets set by the Dairy Industry Road Map, in order to promote environmental sustainability. Great strides have been made. For example, a reduction in carbon emissions of 24% between 1990 and 2015 is credited to dairy farmers. New targets were set for 2020, and then for 2025 and beyond, covering energy, water, waste, air quality, biodiversity and soils. Farmers understand this necessity. They have availed themselves of grants in order to better position their farming operations. Advance warnings by Defra regarding the covering of slurry stores have been well publicised; that's just one example of what is still to come.
