The authors present a method for estimating the penetration load and the suction required to install suction caissons in dense sands. The method is based on data provided by the cone penetration test (CPT), and results were compared with centrifuge test results. Since the calculation of the load required to install a caisson into the ground includes frictional and tip resistance components, it seems logical to solve the installation equations using measurements of sleeve friction and cone resistance from the CPT. Procedures for using this approach have been previously suggested by Feld (2001) and Houlsby et al. (2005) and more recently by Andersen et al. (2008).
