The complex role that dietary fats and oils play in human diets are still the subject of much debate. A recent supplement published in the journal, Advances in Nutrition found that the answers are not always clear. The May 2015 Advances in Nutrition supplement, "Fats and Oils: Where Food Function Meets Health," published by the American Society for Nutrition, reflects continued consumer confusion about the role of dietary fats and oils in the diet and ongoing controversies about replacing fats and oils in the food system that impact diet quality. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend eating between 25 to 35% of calories from fat and substituting saturated (or solid) fats with unsaturated fats. Despite longstanding recommendations on total fat and saturated fatty acids, intakes of these fats have changed little from 1990 through 2005-2006, the latest time period for which estimates are available.
