Until recently, competition among makers of digital cameras centered on pixel counts. Makers concentrated on increasing pixel counts as they developed new models. As makers created CCDs with larger pixel counts, they established a pattern of ever higher pixel counts in newer models. While digital cameras produced under this pattern offered higher definitions, they didn't meet a widening variety of needs. Recently, this trend favoring higher pixel counts has come to a halt as makers turn their attention to creating more diverse kinds of cameras and adding more functions. As a result, digital cameras are appearing in new forms. For example, they are available in combination with mobile phones and as inexpensive so-called toy cameras. Digital cameras are also offering additional functions. They are appearing, for example, with functions for recording moving images and for playing music.
