Matsushita Aims for 35% of Digital Camcorder Market by FY2005

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic) expects the company's share of the global market for digital camcorders to reach 23 percent in FY2003. In the spring of 2002, the company introduced a series of digital camcorders with a compact and lightweight design, the capability of producing high-quality pictures, and features that make them easy to operate. Since the appearance of these models, Matsushita has expanded its share of the Japanese market and also its share of markets outside Japan, especially in Europe and Asia. Digital camcorders are gaining popularity throughout the world. With this trend as a tailwind, the company's second-generation digital camcorders, introduced this spring, have sold well. Akihiro Nakatani, Business Unit Executive, Personal AV Business Unit, Network Business Group, Panasonic AVC Networks Co. of Matsushita, says, "We aim to secure a 35 percent share of the global market by FY2005." The main models in this series are the NV-DS60 and the NV-DS65, which are entry-level models; the NV-GS50, the NV-GS40, the NV-GS30 and the NV-GS10, which are middle-range models; and the NV-GS70, a compact model with three CCDs. Panasonic offers all seven models under uniform global product numbers to the worldwide market.
