One year study of a heavily polluted lake (Kukkarahalli lake near Mysore) was undertaken to study the behaviour of five enzymes (Amylase, Phosphatase, Protease, Catalase and Urease) along with other physico-chemical parameters and their relation to plankton population. Urease activity was not detected. Total bacteria averaged between 52 and 100 x 10 organisms per litre. Euglenaceae (Euglena oxyuris E. elastica, E. polymorpha, E. elogata, Astasia klebsii, Lepocinclis ovum, Phacus tortus and Traehelomonas robusta) and Myxophyceae (Microcystis aeruginosa, Chroococcus dispersus and Phormidium fragile) dominated most of the plankton population. BOD was low during May and June months. Phosphatase activity was very high. Correlation matrix and cluster analysis appear to be handy tools in determining the important factors that control activity in polluted waters.
