摘要

This short volume, when it was published by the Peterson Institute in January 2008, provided a timely answer to the question in the title. Inequality in the United States had been rising for three decades and, as the recession of 2001 gradually faded into the past, concern with inequality grew apace. Of particular concern were the compensation packages earned by top executives of large corporations, especially financial ones, which served to remind the larger population that it was falling behind and, in some cases, had been falling behind for a long time.
