Design History Beyond the Canon

Issues like marriage equality, #BlackLivesMatter, and #metoo are demanding an inclusive voice, justice, and equity across the globe. As institutionalized norms are being challenged and power structures denounced, it makes sense that the traditions of design history are also interrogated. Design History Beyond the Canon critically acknowledges the problems surrounding diversity in design and explores ways to address them. The topics covered by the authors are eclectic and serve to demonstrate the possibility of more inclusive narratives. Questioning the existing limitations of sole geniuses and conventional art histories, Design History Beyond the Canon is an appealing resource for design academics and students alike. The alternative accounts throughout the book are broad in their approach and loosely grouped into three sections titled: 'Users/Consumers', 'Intermediaries', and 'Designers'. Some chapters add validity to everyday household objects and esteem to overlooked architectural gems. Other chapters give agency to the users and consumers of objects and legitimacy to their interpretations of design theory. The agency of traditional tastemakers is questioned as is the underestimation of interior design as a discipline. Racism in visual languages and cultural appropriation is thoroughly examined, and the usefulness of digital platforms as research tools is highlighted. Mary Ellen Dohrs-the first female industrial designer at General Motors-is also added to the canon.
