Fashion Curating: Critical Practice in the Museum and Beyond

With Fashion Curating: Critical Practice in the Museum and Beyond editors Annamari Vanska and Hazel Clark have compiled an anthology that aims to investigate curatorial practices in fashion with particular emphasis on collaboration. Their goal to reconsider established models, systems, and thinking is realized through the varied perspectives of professionals working in, around, and outside of museums and academia. The book is part historical document and part case study, with origins in a 2013 exhibition and subsequent symposium where a selection of the contributors presented materials that became the basis for this volume. The thirteen chapters are divided into three sections: 'Within The Museum', The Independents', and 'Beyond The Museum'. Each features an introduction by the editors and individual authors generally follow a format of presenting personal experiences as a foundation for critical questioning. The commentary examines current practices through these observations in order to reframe fashion curation in the early decades of the twenty-first century as it emerges in the public eye through blockbuster exhibitions, with many presented by fashion brands outside of museum settings.
