摘要

The end of the Second World War marked a turning point in the relationship between writers and politics in Germany. Whereas many writers and intellectuals had turned their back on politics during the Weimar years, or retreated into the realm of Innerlichkeit (inner values) during the period of National Socialism, writers since 1945 have attempted to overcome the traditional dichotomy in Germany between 'Geisf (intellect) and 'Macht' (power) by adopting a more active role in the world of politics. Stuart Parkes takes this as his starting point to chart writers' involvement with politics and their contribution to the democratic development of post-war Germany, from the end of the Second World War to the present.
