Synthesis of Novel Transparent Particles with Alternative Organic-zirconium Hybrid Structures

Material combination of organic and inorganic materials has been attracting much attention, and several chemists have shown an interest in novel organic-inorganic composite materials with new properties. We hold the belief that alternative organic-inorganic hybrid polymers will be new types of composite materials which may show unique properties. We have thus investigated the reactions of zirconium 2-methyl-2-butoxide with several diols such as ethyleneglycol, 4,4'-biphenol and bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, in which the organic moieties may affect the forms and physical properties of the polymers. We have now observed singular phenomena that the reactions give transparent particles with net-worked hybrid structures and the forms of the particles are affected by the organic moieties of the diols.
