S.A. Smith, Revolution and the People in Russia and China: A Comparative History

In dynastic and imperial Russia and China, industrialization intimately interacted with other social processes to trigger and shape capitalist modernity in the 19th and 20th centuries. In S.A. Smith's comparative analysis, "the experience of wage labour and city life" dramatically changed social identities of migrant workers in St. Petersburg and Shanghai. And it did so in ways that were both similar and unique in the Russian and Chinese Revolutions. In the crucible of rapid urban industrialization, Russian and Chinese working classes were transformed by native-place identity, evolving individual and collective senses of self, changed gender consciousness, and nationalism. Smith makes that argument in Revolution and the People in Russia and China: A Comparative History. This is Smith's fourth book on twentieth-century revolutions.
