摘要

First, it must be said that it is difficult to produce a new study on the founding of the Chinese Communist Party with novel content and findings. Yet, that is precisely the challenge that Ishikawa undertook in writing The Formation of the Chinese Communist Party. It was first published in Japanese in 2001, with the English version published more than ten years later. The English-language literature is greatly enriched by this very useful study, which in fact succeeded in introducing an important perspective to the field. At the least, it has the potential to revive some debates regarding the formation of the Chinese Communist Party that were thought to have been settled by past scholarship.
