This study analyzes the drivers and challenges faced by a large Indian company as it proactively sought to transition from philanthropy towards corporate sustainability. It exposes a key challenge that Indian companies face in transforming their social responsibility agenda, a lack of alignment between size and CSR approach. Stuck in the mould of non-strategic corporate philanthropy, even large Indian companies are not exposed to the three essential elements of the Western conceptualization of CSR, which include stakeholder pressure, environmental concerns and integration into the core business.
