Leg length inequality: types, aetiologies, pathomechanics, values and incidence

The discrepancy in the reported incidence and amount of LLI appears to be due to the sensitivity of the assessment method and the unit of measure considered as a baseline. Whatever the true number is of those who have LLI, it is obvious from these and other studies that a very high proportion of the population is affected, thus the need for accurate diagnosis and effective, individualised treatment is great. While not life-threatening, LLI can certainly over time result in significant disability. Podiatrists, trained in physical examination of the lower limb, surgery, biomechanics and radiology, are among those with a well-developed palpatory ability; they use instruments to measure subtle biomechanical variations, have an understanding of the tri-planar relationships of that kinetic chain called the lower limb, and are able to visualise structures and relationships not seen with the naked eye; they are thus in an ideal position to advance the knowledge and understanding of this most ubiquitous of syndromes.
