The Asymmetric Baylis-Hillman Reaction

In summary, we have demonstrated that Oppolzer's sultam can be used in the Baylis-Hillman reaction to obtain products of very high enantiomeric purity. These cyclic products can easily be opened to give optically pure α-methylene-β-hydroxy esters, which are useful building blocks in organic synthesis and precursors to anti aldol adducts.
