Using an MET Service to Manage an Acute Thromboembolic Stroke

In this article, we present a case of a 54-year-old man with a history of ischemic heart disease who was an inpatient following penetrating chest trauma. Three days after his admission, he developed an acute thromboembolic stroke that resulted in a severe right hemiplegia and reduced conscious state requiring endotracheal intubation. He underwent cerebral angiography and regional thrombolysis with urokinase, which resulted in marked improvement in his neurological deficit. The role of the hospital medical emergency team (MET) in identifying, reviewing and coordinating management of this patient is discussed.
