Urinary tract infections (UTI) are the most common type of health care-associated infection in health care facilities in the United States and around the world.The vast majority of UTIs are due to urinary catheters.Catheterization is performed for a number of medically necessary reasons.Too often,however,urinary catheters are placed unnecessarily,left in place for extended periods of time,inserted using improper techniques,and not cared for appropriately,all of which can lead to catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs).
